Gobble Gobble….Give Thanks by Giving Back

November is associated with giving because it hosts the holiday celebration Thanksgiving.  This season, I challenge you to give thanks for your blessings not by words but through actions.  Beverly’s Birthdays took the initiative for action by sharing our blessings with another Pittsburgh shelter.  Beverly’s has already been providing cheer bins to the Center for Victims, but this month we had the pleasure of putting on a birthday celebration for children receiving the center’s supportive services. Alpha Phi, CMU Chapter, dedicated their time for this party and has teamed up with Beverly’s  to volunteer at every party with this shelter! AlphaPhiWe are happy to have them as part of our cheer squad! I wish we were able to share the experience with our birthday backers but to maintain the privacy of the assisted families, photographs of the children were not permitted.  It is said a picture paints a thousand words, but if I had to paint a picture to capture this experience, it wouldn’t be a photo of the children; it would be the word gracious.  We had children ranging in ages from 5-17 in attendance and every single one of the children were full of thanks.  They were so grateful and excited to have us.  In spite of the excitement,  they still were well mannered and courteous.  I know this might not seem like a big deal but a simple thank you is heard less and less frequently these days by both young and old.  It was touching to see the pure joy in the boys’ and girls’ eyes.  St Francis said it best, “For it is in giving that we receive.”  In giving to these children, Beverly’s is the one that received the greatest gift; a greater appreciation for life’s blessings.  Life’s blessings come in both little and small.  Bad days may seem like there is no good but working with these underprivileged children help to see there is good in every day.  Giving thanks can really giveback and Beverly’s feels lucky to bring cheer to these very deserving boys and girls. scarecrowWe made Center for Victims first birthday bash full of favorite crafts and games from our other fall themed parties plus the addition of these not so scary scarecrow crafts purchased from Oriental Trading.    The pumpkin toss for prizes was a favorite game that we shared with the boys and girls from Center of Victims but first they decorated bags with fall stickers to store their goodies. NovemberTreatbags The owl hats were such a hoot at Sojourner house MOMS, that we couldn’t let these kids miss out.  After the hats were crafted, all owl eyes were on Ms. Megs as birthday bins were handed out to the two birthday boys. owlhat The kids were ecstatic to receive a birthday present.  FavorbagsParty guests did not leave emptied handed and received fall themed party bags crafted by the ladies of Alpha Phi.  Our first party with Center for Victims was a huge success and made us feel like we were the ones walking away with something!

Last week was National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness week.  One in 45 children experience homelessness.  Give thanks for your daily blessings by giving back.  Be aware that homelessness exists in your community and educate your children on this problem.  Take action and get involved as a family. Beverly’s Birthdays has many opportunities for families to get involved. If interested in volunteering, e-mail us at getinvolved@beverlysbirthdays.org.  We would love to hear from you.  TGivebackFlyerhe best way to make positive change is to educate our youth and see them as part of the solution.  We love kids helping kids!  An upcoming way to giveback to Pittsburgh’s homeless children is by participating in Beverly’s Birthdays giveback day with Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Monroeville.

Pittsburgh has been on winning streak with both Andrew McCutcheon’s winning MVP and Clint Hurdle winning Manager of the Year for the National League and the Steeler’s faith renewing wins the last two weeks.  We hope Ms. Megs gets to join the ranks with a win in the Harlequin more than words contest. We will find out the results soon and will hopefully announce a victory! Thanks for all the votes!
