A Bewitching Birthday Boonanza

Creak, Cackle, SHRIEK! No eerie sounds were to be heard at last weeks Halloween party with one of our local shelters.   Only sounds of children shrieking with excitement brewed from the children’s activity room.  Beverly’s Birthdays first Halloween party of the season was a frightfully good time. Beverly’s was assisted at this weeks party by  Alpha Phi Omega from the University of Pittsburgh.  Thank you to our boo crew for donating their time and enthusiasm! We hope they had a “toad”ally good time!

Eat, drink, & be scary!  Our very scary goblins bellies were grumbling so first we fed them with everyone’s birthday favorite, PIZZA!! Just the smell of this pizza got our creatures of the night mouths watering.  Our pizza for the evening was donated by the Papa John’s located at Centre Ave in Shadyside.  We can’t thank them enough for the very generous contribution.

Beverly’s Birthdays had lots of witchcrafts and ghostly games planned for our ghoullfriends.  The first activity was our pumpkin hats.  Each child was given a pre-cut orange paper plate to create a jack-o-lantern! This is a great choice for parties that eliminates the messiness of pumpkin carving but still lets the children enjoy the fun of creating festive pumpkins!  We used halloween themed foam stickers.  The kids picked out their eyes, nose, and mouth then stuck it on the pumpkin. Abra Cadabra! A festive pumpkin hat!

The next creepy craft the kids put together are a lot of people’s biggest fear! They have six legs and spin a web. Can anyone guess what is is?? A SPIDER!!! Beverly’s purchased this craft at Target.  The kit came with pipe cleaners, googly eyes, sticker shapes, and pom poms.  Each kit contains enough supplies to make 20 hair raising spiders!  Assistance for the younger kids will be needed but easy to follow directions are included with the kit.  Let the kids be creative and pick out the color spider parts of their choice! This itsy bitsy spider was definitely a goblin pleaser!

The last two spooktacular crafts let the goblins bring out their inner artist.  For the first craft all you need is white paper bags and crayons/markers!  Let the children decorate their own treat bags.  This is very useful if you have games planned with prizes.  There will be no howling over lost treats with a “boo”tiful bag to put them in!  A picture is a great way to remember this year’s boo day and for the memories not to get lost in the cobwebs!  We absolutely loved these festive picture frames also purchased at Target. spookypictureframe Markers and crayons were set out and the goblins got to coloring. We had our new, old school style camera ready.  Who remembers the Polaroid camera??!!
cameraWe really had our monster’s bones rattling when they had to shake the picture to see it! Since we had our monster’s up and mashing we finished our ghoulish get together by playing a game, the pumpkin toss prize patch! This game is very easy to put together.  We were able to continue our Halloween theme in this game by using pumpkin buckets and Halloween prizes.  Examples of prizes include candy, stickers, glow sticks, and/or party bag fillers. Here’s what you need and how to play:

  • 5-6 buckets
  • small object to toss

How to play:

1. Fill buckets with prizes and put in a pyramid shape.
2. Have goblins line up approximately five feet away from bucket.
3. Give monster in line ball and have them toss into any of the buckets.
4. Let the kids go until they get it in a bucket.
5. Have winning boy or girl choose prize from bucket.

This game is guaranteed to have your goblins shrieking! As always we ended the birthday party by singing happy birthday to all the October birthday boys and girls.  Our cupcakes from Brittany/Birthday Cakes for Free Pittsburgh were super spooky and we loved our jack-o-lantern treat bags created by Lori and her family.  The kids were absolutely thrilled with both of your festive creations.

A Recipe to Spread Birthday Cheer

Welcome to our new blog addition! Once a week we will be posting a dessert we find irresistible! Feel free to e-mail us your favorite desserts and check the blog to see if we also thought it was the icing to our cake!  We want to start off our baker’s blog with Beverly’s very own cake recipe.

  • 1 cup of butter
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 pinch of salt

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour one 9×13 inch pan.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until smooth and fully.  Mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. Separate the eggs and set the egg whites aside.  Add the egg yolks one at a time to the creamed mixture.  Continue adding the flour and milk alternately, while continually beating the mixture.  Beat the cake batter until a few air bubbles show.
  4. Beat the 4 egg whites with a dash of salt until stiff.  Gently fold egg whites into the batter. Pour batter into pan.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees until cake is done, approximately 25 to 35 minutes.
  6. ENJOY!!!

It was a Graveyard Smash!

Beverly’s Birthdays had a wicked good time at the halloween themed Monster Mash in the Waterfront this past Saturday.  Luckily, this Frankenstein wasn’t alive and there weren’t any ghosts or ghouls just pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins!

Beverly’s hosted the pumpkin painting booth and it was a real treat!   There was nothing but jack-o-lantern grins on the faces of Beverly’s staff at this chilling autumn affair! We had such a fun time participating in this frightful event! Despite gloomy weather, this celebration was by no means a ghost town! There was a spirited crowd of all ages.  All of the mummy’s little monsters were able to pick out their very own pumpkins from hundreds of different shapes and sizes.  Our aspiring Picasso’s were hard at work turning their orange canvases into BOOtiful creations! Beverly’s and its smashing volunteers had the fangtastic pleasure to work with lots of local costume dressed kids.  This dress up lady bug was too cute to scare!

Instead of a carriage, our pumpkins were turned into magical artwork by our pretty princesses.

This jester wasn’t joking around…He painted his pumpkin with extra care and precision!  We definitely had the kids under our crafty spell.

These guys ain’t afraid of no kids! They joined our little monsters and tried their hand at pumpkin painting.  Great costumes ghostbusters!

Pumpkins were painted first
but this worked up quite a thirst
so our monsters enjoyed witch’s brew
at a stand run by Beverly’s crew!
Beverly’s also ran the delicious apple cider stand! There’s no better way to enjoy fall than with a glass of fresh cider!  A spirited THANK YOU goes out to everyone who made a charitable donation to Beverly’s Birthdays for the pumpkins or a cup of cider! Your generous contribution will go to spreading more birthday cheer! Another thrilling THANK YOU goes out to our volunteers! Without Beverly’s volunteers events like this and birthday parties wouldn’t be possible.  Beverly’s Birthdays feels so lucky to have participated in the Monster Mash among many other great Pittsburgh businesses! Fangs for the memories! A special thank you to Revive Marketing Group for having us!

JUST A REMINDER: There’s 8 days left in October!!!! So get your socks together for Socktober!! Help keep our monsters tooties warm in this spine tingling weather!

Prizes given out to winners in each age group! So mummys and daddy’s be sure to bring your little pumpkins by our booth for a halloween craft.  We are very excited to connect with new families in the Pittsburgh area and spread birthday cheer!  Halloween is full of spooks, shrieks, sweets, and this year SOCKS!  Beverly’s Birthdays is joining Soulpancake to turn October into Socktober.  The BIG idea behind this small act of kindness will touch the soles of homeless children living right here in the Pittsburgh area.   It’s easy to get involved! Just bring a new pair of socks, any size toddler through teen, to our booth at the Waterfront in Homestead this Saturday.  Make it a family affair and get the kids involved by having them pick out the pair of socks.  It is a great way to teach kids the valuable lesson of helping others and there is nothing better than kids helping kids! Fall is finally here. Like the leaves changing colors, we too can make a change.  By getting involved with Beverly’s Birthdays you can positively impact homeless children in the Pittsburgh area. Fall is a season of giving and we can embrace the concept of giving in our everyday life. Giving doesn’t have to be a financial contribution; you could donate your time or one of your talents. You don’t have to be someone of importance to be capable of making a difference. One must just possess the compassion for helping others. Beverly’s Birthdays is always looking for good hearted individuals to volunteer at our shelters. The more volunteers we can accumulate on a regular schedule, the more shelters we can provide parties for the children.  This week we want to showcase a volunteer who truly touched our hearts. Meet Bob….

Last week, we had the great pleasure of meeting Bob when he came to our office to drop off a large contribution that he had organized.  Bob is from Partners from Quality Inc, a group home for residents with intellectual disabilities. He organized a big donation with other group members. Bob was an absolute delight to have in the office and brought tears to our eyes! He was full of cheer and joy. He was so thankful towards us when we were the ones who were so greatful for his tremendous effort.  It just goes to show that helping others is an amazing selfless action that makes you feel like you are the one receiving a gift.  Bob is a great example that anyone can volunteer no matter what your circumstances.  We can’t thank Bob enough for his offerings. He left an impact on us and will also impact the lives of many homeless boys and girls.

Another great example of giving happened last week.  Last Thursday, was Pittsburgh’s Day of Giving.  Beverly’s Birthdays was excited to be a part of this day and among so many other charitable organizations making a difference in the city of Pittsburgh.  A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to everyone who made a financial contribution to Beverly’s Birthdays.  Your contribution will go directly to spreading birthday cheer and changing the way homeless boys and girls celebrate their birthdays.  We are so grateful for the one time donations and would love to grow a relationship between our donors for long time donations and volunteering. If you have a desire for helping others and want to work with the homeless population please take a look at our volunteer application via our website.  This season, I challenge every one of you to welcome the concept of giving in your life. “Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Ghandi

Fall Harvest Frenzy

Last week, Beverly’s Birthday kicked off the start of fall with a harvest birthday celebration at Sojourner House MOMS! There were smiling faces all around with cupcakes, pizza, and games abound!  A generous donation from Lucci’s Pizza filled the bellies of our not so scary scarecrows before starting our fun filled fall activities and games. The boys and girls crafted their very own owl hats (available at Oriental Trading) which were a big hoot!

The kids then showcased more of their artistic ability by painting fall themed sun catchers (available at Oriental Trading).  The next activity was definitely a crowd pleaser when the boys and girls got a sweet treat no one can pass up, donuts!!!  However, we didn’t make it too easy for them to get a mouthful.  We tested their persistence by dangling the donuts off of a tree with a piece of string. The kids then put their hands behind their back and went at it! The persistence definitely paid off, look at this very sweet smile.

To end the evening the kids participated in two exciting relay races.  For the first race, the children were divided into two teams.  The goal was to take bird seed out of a bin at one end and fill up the empty bin at the other side.  The kids were chirping like birds cheering their teammates on!  The last relay was our scarecrow dress up relay.  Two at a time they raced to put on proper scarecrow attire as fast as possible.  Our birthday boy, “Z”, loved this activity so much he didn’t want to take his overalls off!

Every boy and girl was a winner in the night’s competitive races and were rewarded with festive cupcakes from Faithfully Cakes.  The cupcakes were “the icing on the cake” and brought our fall fest theme full circle!  We ended the night with all the children crowded near and spreading birthday cheer to our guest of honor “Z”.
