It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane.. It’s Superman…

Yesterday we hosted the fourth Beverly’s Birthday celebration. This month we did a Super Hero theme party and we celebrated Johnica, Jared and Quason. We had a BLAST! The birthday recipients got to wear awesome red capes and all the kids tested their super hero strength. We had shuttle races, the limbo, a make your own mask station and three pinatas!!

One of our awesome volunteers, Maggie, made fabulous super hero cupcakes for the kids!! A big thank you to all of the volunteers who came last night: Josh, Sarah, Adam, Marianne, Dana, Jim, Ann and Mike for your support!

From the looks of the photos, I think they had a fun!!

Hey Blondie!

This past Tuesday I had the pleasure of speaking at the Pleasant Hills Rotary at the Blue Flame Restaurant on 51. In one word…AWESOME! All of the members of the rotary were so nice and they all seemed inspired by Beverly’s Birthdays and want to show their support. My favorite moment was when one of the older gentlemen (at least 70) said, “Hey Blondie, why do you wear those headbands on your head?!”. If you know me, an outfit is not complete without a corresponding headband. I said, “this one matches my Beverly’s Birthday shirt. It is cheerful and I am all about spreading birthday cheer!” Thanks for having us guys!

The Cake & Ice Cream Annual Campaign

On Friday, May 18 we hosted our first corporate fundraiser at Vivisimo in Squirrel Hill. They allowed Beverly’s Birthdays to come in and do a short presentation and host a Meet & Great Bake Sale during their Friday lunch. We had a blast spreading birthday cheer and giving out delicious treats! Thank you to our bakers: Karen, Tish, Ann and Tina and to Vivisimo employees for your donations. We raised $251 for our Cake & Ice Cream Annual Campaign.

In Honor of Mother’s Day…..

I would like to say a special thank you to my mom for all of the amazing birthday memories she gave me and my siblings. For as long as I can remember, my mom made it a priority to make all of our birthday celebrations special. I can remember I had a Little Mermaid Party, a Ginger Bread Man Decorating Party, a Surprise 16th Birthday Party, and even during college I would receive an awesome birthday box in the mail.

So to my Mom, thank you for making my birthday’s special. Happy Mother’s Day.  Consider giving to a child and ensuring that his/her birthday is special.

Meet Amayzsha. Or better yet, as she would say, meet Amayzsha-Simone. This little darling turned 4 back in February at our very first party. This party was “diva” themed because all February birthdays happened to be girls. However, it is as though Megs created this party theme for the diva that is, Amayzsha-Simone. Amayzsha basked in her pampering as Marianne painted her nails and Krystyn put make-up on her smiling face. Then, she rocked our make shift dance floor with her breakdancing moves. When it came time to sing Happy Birthday to this little princess, her smile spread as wide as her face, she clapped her hands in excitement, and of course, hit every camera angle right on point as all divas should.

That smile, energy, and excitement during her Happy Birthday song is one that will never leave us as volunteers. I couldn’t help but look around and acknowledge the fact that this is why we were there. My wise mother has always told me that everything happens for a reason, and here, in Amayzscha’s smile and bright eyes, was our reason staring right back at us.

Since then, we have returned to the Sojourner House for two more birthday celebrations. In March, little Amayzsha began to cry whenever she looked around the room and realized that she wasn’t one of the kids wearing the birthday crowns. After many attempts at explaining to her that this month it wasn’t her turn, we finally gave in and let her wear one for a few minutes and a few photos, of course. In April, I caught Amayzsha sneaking an extra candle into her cupcake. The only thing I could do was laugh because

1. I’ve learned that there’s no arguing with a 4-year-old. Especially if that 4-year-old is as cute as Amayzsha. and 2. Spreading birthday cheer is the reason we show up each month, so while the actual party recipients must always be acknowledged first, why should we not sprinkle a little on Amayzsha while we’re there, too?

All I have to say is…Look out Bieber, Amayzsha’s caught Birthday Fever! You should to by checking us out at
